Jeremy, it's not often I've noticed you come out with a clear and unambiguous statement on events be it in the UK or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

I heard the news on the BBC world service. I can't say too much about Boris, he's an unknown quantity to me. I do know of Ken Livingstone though. When I was living in London, he seemed to be in touch with the masses. So what caused them to turn their backs on him, puzzles me. Hopefully this is not the end of his political career!

On Boris and policy: I watched the tv this morning and again all I heard was abolish bendy-buses and some vague guff about policing. Even in the interviews after the result, Boris Buffoon is clearly shocked at the responsibility bestowed upon him: overseeing the Olympics, ensuring Cross Rail finally happens, taking a firm grip on violent crime and security issues in the capital, keeping London at the forefront of global capital... all this from an Eton toff whose sole experience of management was running a little-read Tory rag for a few years with a history of inappropriate behaviour..

Its somewhat absurd that someone so massively unsuited for the role can have been granted it. The Evening Standard's longstanding hate campaign against Livingston must surely have been what tipped the balance..

Boris Johnson isnt much different from Ken. Both very arrogant men but the truth is that Boris came across more personable in these elections. Like or hate him but really he worked damn hard during this campaign and did not have too many gaffes....

Seriously, this is a wake up call for Labour. I do like Gordon Brown, but the everyday economic realities faced by the Londoner have sown seeds of dissaffection. I think he should fall on his sword. We don't deserve the Tories again. London is far too complex to be handed to a myopic twat like Boris Johnson. The Olympics and Crossrail collectively will deliver close 20bn into the London economy and cushion the shock of the global economic downturn. The 300 odd hectares that is the Olympic site will be finally integrated into the city and lift the surounding areas that have suffered decades of neglect, areas that are predominantly the home of ethnic minorities who the Tories do not care for. The Thames Gateway strategy that Ken championed is directing investment in an industrial wasteland providing jobs and much needed housing. Ken has shaped a coherent London spatial policy in the London Plan. Ken has worked hard to safeguard the production of affordable homes by making it mandatory for developers to deliver a portion of this in new build schemes. Ken increased the number of buses in London and fought for REAL investment in transport. Mr Brown's insistence on PPP led to the Metronet fiasco. Ken has shaped London and positioned this great city to be the dominant world city for decades to come. This is now at risk in the hands of the Tories. Boris referred to black people as 'piccaninies' I shudder at the thought of such a racist running the most diverse city in Europe, it really is frightening.... can someone wake me up from this nightmare!!!

Unbelievable - its looks like London, in its collective (as)inanity, has elected that utter buffoon Boris Johnson to be the new mayor.

I'm still reelling meself. Boris has proven himself to be a prize pillock but he has managed to get himself voted in cause of how disappointed Londoners are in Gordon Brown (he also just managed to avoid any major gaffes in the last year).

The three main candidates were on Question time last week and crime and the deaths of the teenagers on london's streets was one stick Boris was hitting Ken with. I wonder what the next four years will mean for London?

People are sick and tired of Brown's taxes, Labour need to put the squeeze on him if they are to avoid the downward spiral. There is evident poverty everywhere you go in the UK, people are just scraping by, every price is being put up and taxes and penalties are rising above inflation, crazy, just crazy.

A city like London should be run by the Liberals anyway. Too bad the Lib Dems didn't go all out for it.
