More on Liberty Gospel Church etc.

Good article in today's Sunday Telegraph on the disturbing child-witch phenomenon in Akwa Ibom State - here. The sooner Liberty Gospel Church is closed down under the Child Rights Act the better. Helen Ukpabio needs psychiatric care - clearly she shouldn't be let loose on vulnerable/gullible people in the area. Meanwhile, it beggars belief that someone who calls himself 'The Bishop' can still walk round a free man after boasting he has murdered 110 children.

Thanks for this post. A lot of people will not believe Helen Ukpabio needs psychiatric care...in fact a lot of people will not believe they are living a delusion. It is Helen Ukpabio that need demons or other evil spiritual entities evicted from her person, if any such thing exists. May the devil have her.

It seems she has produced a modern day Malleus Maleficarum.

I think 'the devil' already has her. She's encouraging people to kill and maim children - babies!

For what? Profit. Religious exploitation.

I hope this can become more widely publicized and that Nigeria can get a handle on this.

It can't happen soon enough.

Jeremy,

I am aware of the excellent work of Steeping Stones NGO, but the solution to this madness has got to be more robust than a few slippered British Aid workers picking abandoned kids off the street.

This is criminal activity - child-abuse, and worse.

I am vaguely aware of some child rights legislation, which is bogged down in the NASS. But surely there is already enough on the books to do these people. There has got to be a law somewhere in the Nija legal tomes against driving a nail thru a child's skull!

What do we have a Human Rights Commission for, when children of the poor (as they overwhelmingly are, inevitably) can be treated this way?!

Somebody needs a slap, I'm afraid.

My hands are available, sir.

Hi Modibbo, others

Good to see that this cause is gaining more of the attention it deserves...

I'm one of SSN's trustees and couldn't agree more that this problem is far bigger than any single NGO or group can handle. From the outset, we've worked with a small Nigerian org, CRARN (http://www.crarn.org/) - it was they, not us, who took the first steps on what will no doubt be a very long road to ending these harmful beliefs and practices. Our role has always been to support and enhance their work and, increasingly, to advocate for the children's rights - here in Nigeria and beyond.

As Oga J has so rightly pointed out, it's essential that we stand together on this issue. We would like to see a coalition of Nigerian civil society orgs come together to challenge these beliefs and practices, to call the government to account and, most importantly, to support the rights of these vulnerable children. So, please, spread the word, get in touch and lend your hands!

Sosong eti eti.

In my head and around me 6:32 pm

She does not need psychiatric care. She needs to go through the same exorcism. This is pur evil.

I have spent some years in different parts of the Niger Delta (roughly a year in Akwa Ibom) and Akwa Ibom was one of the nicest places. And being largely rural, poverty is commonplace.
I can now not imagine this evil being pepetrated there. The government/police's inaction leads me to believe that they too may be afraid that they might be visited by witches should they nip these acts in the bud.

Ignorance and fear rule. And unfortunately they kill my people.

Wow - but is there anything else we can do besides have yet another discussion? I did take a look at the CRARN website; however besides making a donation, how else can we help, especially if we don't live in Nigeria? I am a mother of three and I sigh and throw my hands up at most of the stories I hear regarding 419, corruption, etc...

But this?

I work with Defence for Children International - Nigeria and our work has bene geting the word out that we have a Child Rights Act and violations like this are punishable under the law. Unfortunately our governments, particularly the governments of Cross River and Akwa Ibom are not ready to tackle this menance. we must stand together. Ellie, we have your back on this. I think we should plan an advocacy and serious campaign on this.

@ Ini

Great! Let's get talking...

@ Twinsmum

Please do consider making a donation to Stepping Stones Nigeria. We are a UK-registered charity and, as such, are subject to strict rules and regulations regarding the use of funds donated to our organisation.
