Apparently, quite a few of the stolen bronzes were 'sold back' to the Nigerian government in the 1950's and 1960's. I've heard that some of these were then sold by corrupt officials at the National Museum. There's a story to be told about what happened to these missing bronzes..

Had a blog entry on the African exhibition a year ago http://naijaman.cfmxdeveloper.co.uk/diary/2006/03/day-at-british-museum.html
Sadly we don't appreciate our art, it’s likely only a few of us have bothered to visit the British museum to view our 'stolen artworks'.
Surely a day will come when we will demand that the British museum return all the stolen items back to Nigeria and people like me will not have to suffer the indignity of viewing art that was looted from us in a foreign museum.
I hope the museum has finally got round to correcting that erroneous map of Nigeria (it had Lokoja in the wrong geographical location)
