Education..

Here's a little poser: when do you think the national curriculum in Nigeria was last changed? Have a guess, and then turn to the comments to see the answer.

It was 1981. For the past 25 years, Nigerian schoolkids have been learning exactly the same thing..

That was the year I left secondary school.

So what were all those professors who became ministers of Education doing, including the one who was once the Education minister and who is now the Aviation minister?

It is a travesty that the current and future competitiveness of Nigeria is put in such great peril.

And with the Sino-Nigerian relations promising technology transfer mentioned in African Shirts, how can you transfer technology when there is no fundamental knowledge to interface with?

I do worry, I do really worry.

who's to say constant change is a great thing...even if they could do what theyve been doing since 1981 well I'd have no complaints. Change for change sake is pointless.

The wonderful thing about Nigeria is how the incredulous seems normal. Any right thinking person would be shocked and appalled by this, but I'm not in the least bit suprised.

Jeremy:

You mean learning the same things, such as Mathematics, Reading, and Writing? I guess I don't understand your outrage, if it's that. Change simply for change's sake isn't good.

As we Americans say: if it ain't broke, don't "fix" it.

UPDATE: As I was going to post this, I read what anonymous said at 11:51! Well, someone else who thinks as I! What are the odds?

I agree that change for its sake isn't necessarily a good thing. However, is there evidence that there are systems in place to ensure regular comprehensive reviews? I lean towards the line of thought that this state of affairs is as a result of negligence not design.

Hmmm...1981? I was not even born. What is the Minister of Eductaion doing?
There will be no change(significant one, anyway) if there is no drastic shake-up in our eductaional system cos quality education is the first step to development.
