Abuja cinema enfin
The Nu Metro cinema opened on Thursday. At last we will join Lagos in being able to watch bubble-gum Hollywood trash in airconditioned surround sound big screen comfort. Meanwhile, the Abuja Silverbird cinema is at foundation stage. So there'll be two places to watch chav trash. Fantastic! One fine day, someone will open an arthouse cinema showing the best of American Independent cinema, European, Japanese etc cinema and we'll never leave. The other good news is that Abuja will at last (if all goes well) have a customer-centric affordable broadband service in the next month or so (more details later).
Meanwhile, we went to the Abuja Literary Society bash last night. There was an impressive turn out of budding young poets, performance and otherwise. Unfortunately, there was also a fair dose of bigmanist sycophancy as well which was utterly tedious. We need to find a way to slice off the macho bravado and nurture the talent..

Some of us like Bubblegum Hollywood "Trash".
At least when we watch a bad movie in those genres, we can tell it's awful straightaway.
Unlike with "arthouse" movies, most of which are truly dire but which try to blame their lack of popularity on the audience.
Another case of The Emperor's New Clothes. People really need to read that story. There's much wisdom in fairytales.
Have to agree with kemi 100%
besides some of the most pleasant movie experiences are to be found through hollywood. Crash comes to mind!
There has to be a mainstream theatre in place in order to justify the existence of an art house theatre.
As an American, I feel obliged to point out that American cinema is, in fact, pretty awful. Most of the better mainstream films come from the U.K., not Hollywood and even American art films tend to be inferior to their Canadian and European counteparts.

That doesn't matter. They make more movies than anyone bar the Indians.
Even if only 5% of the movies are good, that's still a helluva lot more than the stuff coming out of elsewhere.

LIKE WHAT??
If that was the case most BAFTAs (the British equivalent of the Oscars) would not be given to Americans.
Take a look at the list of this year's nominations.. just a handful of them are British, and even then not 100%.
Nollywood movie channel prepares launch.
Americans have Hollywood, Indians Bollywood, and Nigerians in the UK will soon have Nollywood Movies, a channel dedicated to Nigerian films.
Zenithfilms, a London-based company which distributes Nigerian programming to airlines which fly to Africa and America, is planning to launch a 24-hour channel on Sky in January 2007.
"Nollywood is the third largest movie industry in the world," said Alfred Soroh, head of sales and marketing at Zenithfilms. Some films are beginning to filter through to the UK and are gaining acknowledgment such as Osuofia in London.
"We want to launch a channel dedicated to Nollywood and even in the future would like to help finance one or two films."
