Moving on

I had to delete the last few posts on celebrating Nigeria - they were getting way too bitchy and invading my personal life. I come away from it with a strong distinction to be made between two types of pride: the former where you are proud of something for specific reasons, the latter where the pride is for its own sake and cannot be substantiated. The latter type cannot be analysed beyond being a pre-rational emotion, whereas the former is always open for discussion or contestation. I think my posts brought up some confusion between the two types.

Enough already. We're in Lagos to catch fun. I took an okada latish last night: lovely to feel the wind wushing by and the tyres bouncing off the potholes.

You forgot the third type of pride. The one that goeth before a fall, one of the seven deadly sins and an abomination for any bible-believing person out there.

Such people might like to ask themselves if this pride they have in Nigeria is what keeps the country from moving forward.

I still argue that the second type of pride you're talking about is love and not pride.

I experienced the ride during my visit to lagos in 2004 albeit a courageous one. Shortly after midnight, my car suddenly came to halt right on the 3rd mainland (in the middle of) bridge. I had been to see an uncle on Cameron road and was rushing back home to my residence in Ikeja, to catch enough sleep, in time for a meeting early next morning. I was rescued by fierce looking okada riders. I wonder what had been destined to happen that early morning night. Perhaps my ancestors and late dad were watching over. I say this because the following day, the felas said to me "oga na your head save you". I love naija.

Okada's were my only available source of transport in Nigeria, I took them everywhere. They're wonderful. Thank God I never had an accident. The most interesting ride I took was up Afi Mountain - 40mins with two of us on the back of a motorbike going up a dirt track - fantastic! My only protection was sunglasses and a headscarf - lol - my mother would have screamed blue murder if she'd known but no mobile reception, what a pity.

"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar."
